We are deeply saddened to hear the passing away of Professor Makoto Nagao on 23rd May 2021. Professor Nagao was one of the pioneers of computational linguistics. He had made significant contributions to broad topics in the field, including machine translation, corpus-based linguistics, electronic dictionaries, digital library, etc. He was literally known globally as the father of Computational Linguistics of Japan. He received the ACL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. His death is a great loss not only to AFNLP and the computational linguistics community but to the world of science and technology. In our hearts, Professor Nagao is going to stay alive forever.
